I took a 1,300-mile motorcycle trip in June that included a visit to Erie. My group rode together with stops in State College and Bradford to visit the Zippo lighter museum, and we got a rental house near Erie to stay for few days.
We visited many spots along the route. The photo is of Erie Land Lighthouse, the first commissioned lighthouse on the Great Lakes in the United States. It was built in 1818, according to Presque Isle Light Station, a nonprofit whose goal is to preserve Erie’s lighthouses. In 1857, a new, 56-foot tower was constructed.
The day I visited was very hot, about 95 degrees. I saw bright sunlight above the lighthouse, so I took a picture of it.
The lighthouse was deactivated in 1899 and closed. Thanks to the efforts of the city of Erie and the Erie Port Authority, it has been restored. For information on the lighthouse, visit presqueislelighthouse.org.
